CHINA CHARGES TO BECOME WORLD'S TOP STEEL EXPORTER

Last year saw a seismic shift in patterns of world steel trade with Chinese mills surging to the top of the exporters' list, according to latest figures provided by London's Iron & Steel Statistics Bureau (ISSB). The global trade in steel mill products (semis, long and flat products, and tubes) rose by 13 percent to around 283 million tonnes, compared with 250 million tonnes in 2005, said ISSB. China, whose exports rose 91 percent to 49 million tonnes, topped the list, followed by Japan, Russia, the EU25, Ukraine, South Korea, Brazil, Turkey, Taiwan, the USA, India and Canada. These top 12 exporters controlled 88 percent of the world's steel trade, up from 86 percent in 2005.
