Commercial services for transporting fish aboard BGV Fast Jet Cargo Vessels are due to start operation at the end of 2006/beginning of 2007. Based at Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the north west coast of France, they will initially be used to carry truck trailers loaded with fish from Norway via Boulogne to Spain and return with fish, or fruit and vegetables. Other routes will follow. The BGV, a new type of vessel based on a trimaran hull, was designed in France and tested by the French navy. Says project director Jean-Louis Romanini: 'It was conceived as a naval ship as it is very fast - the original vessel could travel at speeds of 60-70 knots [miles/kilometres] per hour in almost all sea conditions.
