DRI PRODUCTION DIPS IN 2001

Global production of DRI declined 7.5 percent in 2001, slipping from 43.8 million mt in 2000 to 40.5 million mt last year, reports Midrex Technologies Inc. (Charlotte, N.C.).This production decrease-the first since 1982-was generally the result of two factors: the worldwide recession in steel prices and the sudden rise in natural gas prices in the winter of 2000-2001 in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, Midrex notes.
