THE average annual production of seabream within Europe increased by 3.5% between 2001 and 2006, but there was an even greater growth in consumption of 6.1 % per annum (pa). Hence there was a strong rise in imports (+11% pa), and even more (price) competition for EU producers from third-party countries. What should help EU seabream producers is that there is a continuing shift of retail sales from traditional to modern outlets, reflecting the increasing share of supermarkets in the food markets of southern Europe, and thus potentially opening the door to more value-added products.
