In my two years on the ISRI safety staff, I've visited more than 150 recycling operations from coast to coast. I haven't seen everything, but I've seen a lot. I've learned that, in many cases, you truly can judge a book by its cover: A neat, clean, organized yard is typically a safe yard, and vice versa. I've also noticed that safe recycling operations tend to exhibit these seven common characteristics: They know their numbers. On my site visits, one of my first questions is, "How is your safety performance?"
