After years of trials and false starts, the broadcasting industry is showing a renewed interest in IPTV. A number of advances have now made IP a viable method of distribution. There has been a dramatic rollout of broadband networks with increasing bandwidth, with some now offering 25Mbps links and most capable of providing 5Mbps whilst the existing MPEG-2 compression technology has improved to a point that makes IPTV viable over these networks. New compression technologies such as MPEG-4 part 10 (also called AVC and H264) and Microsoft's Windows Media 9 reduce the bandwidth requirements even further. And silicon technology has developed to the point where IPTV set-top boxes are now becoming cost-effective.
