Spotting special spat: How Cawthron is breeding better mussels

Nelson's Cawthron Institute is running a breeding programme for the Greenshell~(TM) mussel to give the mussel industry the same benefits that land-based farmers get through selective breeding. Funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST), and with support from the mussel industry, the programme is almost at the stage where the first benefits are becoming available to mussel growers.
