Tim Findley delves into engine shafts. Not the sort of shafting that investment and finance companies have been at, up and down the country. Not even the shafting that developers have been doing, fitting old folks into leaky buildings. Mind you, thesefirst two subjects are real gold for writers. Plenty of mileage. I could bang on all day, revealing juicy tid-bits of how dear old Grandpa and Grandma Bloggs were swindled out of their life savings, and just which "Gentlemen's Clubs" benefited from those savings. But this is an engineering column, so as boring as it may be, the shafting we are on about is the stuff that connects the engine to the gearbox. And very important it is, too. There are few opportunities for skipper and crew to get up close and personal to the ship's shaft.
