This month Dr Rosemary ("Rosie") Hurst took over as Fisheries Chief Scientist as NIWA. She has been in fisheries science for more than three decades - more than enough time to form opinions about the role NIWA science can play. She takes the baton from Dr John McKoy, one of the key figures in fisheries research for 40 years, overseeing a profound development in the understanding of marine fisheries during the course of his career. Along with his knowledge and experience, the advice and support John provided to all NIWA staff over the years will be greatly missed, Rosie says.
