Mediterranean markets shine

The Mediterranean as a seafood business area is continually expanding, currently registering 2.2 million tonnes of production and 16.2kg eaten per capita. Catches at sea and in inland waters total 1.3 million tonnes, while aquaculture figures alone show an overall production of 880,000 tonnes. According to a report from Ismea, the public company that promotes typical products from Italy, PUEM (Mediterranean countries that are EU members) have the largest share of overall seafood consumption, with 5.6 million tonnes. The report, Towards a common rule system for fisheries in the Mediterranean basin, says that Malta is leading this charge with 50.2kg of product per capita, then Spain with 47.5kg, France with 31.3kg and Cyprus with 28.5kg.
