Of all the problems facing the surimi industry, the most important is a shortage of raw material, largely due to a demand for fillets. But there is also growing competition in the surimi industry, with new producers fighting for market share. Alaska pollock has long been the preferred raw material for surimi. Catches of Alaska pollock have been declining over the past 10 to 20 years, peaking in 1986-87 when landings reached 6.8 million tonnes. By 2002 the total had fallen to just 2.7 million tonnes,although there was a slight increase in 2003 when landings were almost 2.9 million tonnes.
