When the price of fuel was disgustingly high last year, I convinced her indoors to book us a sail-assist cruise - all in the name of research, of course. The ship was Windstar, a 140-passenger, relatively modern, purpose-built motor sailor on a re-location voyage, out of Bridgetown, Barbados for Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica. En route, there was a chance to spend some time in Tahiti with our old friend Jean-Louis Tachoires. Jean-Lou has appeared in this column from time to time over the years, because of his marine engineering business in Papeete. His family runs that now. But instead of taking up golf in his retirement, like any sensible pensioner, he took up fish-smoking. This is totally nuts. He is missing that most majestic of sights - a well-hit golf ball sailing off the tee, in a perfect parabola.
