Malaysian bar and rod producer Malayawata Steel is considering plans to increase capacity and establish itself as a regional force in the supply of construction steel.The Penang-based company, which is under new management, has begun an internal review to assess the viability of such an expansion and the means by which to achieve it.Malayawata currently operates one electric arc furnace at its works in Prai, with annual steelmaking capacity of 450,000 tonnes. "We're looking into the possibility of upgrading to 600,000 tpy," said a senior company official. "We are conducting an internal review but have no firm plans as to when we're going to complete it," he said.
