As U.S. mini-mills attempt to reinvent themselves to cope with changes in the steel industry, they may take steps away from consolidation and toward more rationalization. That move will bring fundamental changes to the industry, according to panelists at AMM and World Steel Dynamic's Steel Success Strategies XVI conference here."For those who survive, the industry as we know it is gone," said Donald F. Barnett, president of Economic Associates Inc., Great Falls, Va., a longtime steel analyst. "The mini-mills represent a blueprint for the future. The future is here." Barnett made his comments as part of a panel discussion of the topic "Mini-mills Reinvent Themselves" at Wednesday morning's opening sessions. His fellow panelists, which included top executives from three U.S. mini-mills, said their companies are interested in growth by acquisition if the right opportunities present themselves.
