A private company in the north of the country has become the latest Vietnamese firm to order new bar and wire rod rolling facilities, fuelling government concerns of overcapacity in the construction steel sector. Tam Diep Steel Rolling Mill Co, located in Ninh Binh province about 100km south of Hanoi, has placed an order with VAI Pomini for installation of a new mill to roll 150mm square billet into 5.5-16mm wire rod, 9-50mm reinforcing and plain bar and 14-32mm square bars. Start-up is scheduled for the second half of 2002.Officials at Tam Diep said that the new mill will add 300,000 tpy of rolling capacity to the 50,000 tonnes already in operation. The company did not reveal where it will source its billet, although imports would appear to be the most likely option.
