THAILAND'S FIRST HOT STRIP MILL FOR SAHAVIRIYA STEEL INDUSTRIES BANG SAPHAN WORKS

In Bang Saphan INNSE installed Thailand's first hot strip mill in green field conditions on a turn key basis for Sahaviriya Steel Industries Co. The hot strip mill was the first industrial plant in the area so that no infrastructure at all existed on the site. The start up was foreseen in a very short time taking into account the site conditions. The mill is a very compact semi-continuous hot strip mill. The mill is fed with slads bought on the marker since steelmaking facilities and continuous casters will be added in a second phase. On this hot strip mill all the technical solutions necessary to reach the best strip quality and a high level of mill reliability were applied based in INNSE's know-how and experience. The main technological features are described in the paper. The mechanical assembly started at the beginning of 1993 and in June reached the 95percent. The furnaces were lighted up and the slabs were rolled five days in advance with respect to the schedule date. The tests of coil box and finishing mill were carried out during two months and on Feb. 28th, just on schedule, the first set of coil was rolled on the finishing mill. During the first week of March the mill started the production of commercial coils.
