Senate Passes Brownfields Bill

The U.S. Senate has overwhelmingly passed a bill that will make it easier for scrap recyclers to purchase and clean up abandoned or contaminated industrial properties-called "brownfields"-without fearing environmental liability related to the previous contamination.The Senate approved the bill 99-0 on April 25, with Sen. Tim Hutchinson (R-Ark.)-a co-sponsor of the bill-absent. Legislators hope the bill will help develop blighted industrial areas, particularly in industrial Midwestern and Eastern states.
