Scrapyard dangers that threaten hands and fingers can lurk in all kinds of places. For example, one moment a worker is pulling aluminum cans out of a garbage bag-a seemingly low-risk task-and the next moment he's standing there with a hypodermic needle hanging from his hand. Joe Bateman, ISRFs safety outreach manager, witnessed such an incident a few years ago. The worker stood there, terrified, he recalls. "We both knew there was the potential for some sort of blood-borne pathogen to have entered his body."
