The new hyperspectral cameras that Raytheon is on contract to start delivering to the U.S. Air Force later this year are the Pentagon's response to an internal call from the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan for more hyperspectral imagery, a defense official said. The instruments -- called Airborne Cueing and Exploitation Systems Hyperspectral Systems, or ACES HY (pronounced "aces high") -- will be flown inside the noses of Predator unmanned aircraft. They are designed to find hidden objects and chemical traces by collecting numerous wavelengths of reflected sunlight in the invisible infrared range, according to Raytheon.
