Enterococcal endocarditis among intravenous drug users: report of a cluster of cases, possibly caused by contaminated amphetamine.

The use of intravenous drugs imposes a high risk of acquiring significant bacterial infections, the most serious of which is endocarditis. In intravenous drug users (TVDU), endocarditis most commonly affects the valves of the right side of the heart [1]. The majority of such infections are caused by Staphylo-coccus aureus, while enterococci are regarded as quite uncommon pathogens in IVDU endocarditis, causing 2-4% of such infections [2-4].
