摘要

In its very first annual report in 1959 the Red Deer Commission expressed concern at the size of the red deer population as judged by the level of damage to agriculture and forestry, concluding that the annual cull of hinds was too low. Ever since, concerns from many interests have continued as deer numbers and densities have risen further. The author was commissioned by WWF Scotland and RSPB Scotland to produce a full report, Impacts of Wild Deer in Scotland - How Fares the Public Interest? When itwas published in September 2003 it attracted a number of largely inaccurate media headlines. Preparation of the report involved consultation with a wide range of organisations and individuals and the valuable contributions received are gratefully acknowledges. This article is a brief look at some of the findings and recommendations.
