The Chubu region is home to many of Japan's manufacturing giants: Toyota Motor, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries (aerospace) to name just a few. As such, the region is one of the more economically "lively" parts of the country, even in times of recession. Right now Chubu is gearing up for two megaprojects: the Expo 2005 Aichi, and the Chubu International Airport scheduled to open the same year. Nicknamed Ai - Chikyu Haku ("Exposition of Global Harmony"), the Expo 2005 Aichi has the theme of "Nature's Wisdom" with an emphasis on the technology and environment. The grounds will cover approximately 173 hectares, including the Aichi Youth Park in Nagakute Town and the upcoming Kagaku Gijyutsu Koryu Center in Toyota City, where for 185 days (starting March 25, 2005) some 15 million visitors are expected.
