VARIABILITY STUDIES ON SOME QUANTITATIVE CHARACTERS IN DAHLIA (Dahlia variabilis)

Eighteen germplasm of dahlia were evaluated at the National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources Regional Station, Niglat, Bhowali, Nainital, Uttaranchal for the phenotypic and genotypic variability for fourteen quantitative characters. The characters: flower diameter, number of branches per plant, flower disk diameter, flower weight, days to 50% flowering and number of flower per plant exhibited high phenotypic and genotypic variability, high to moderate heritability and genetic advance, showing additive gene effect. Thus, selection based on the above characters will be more effective for further breeding programme.
