Japan seeks new scrap export markets

In the face of declining demand from Taiwan and Korea and amid the looming threat of China becoming a net scrap exporter, Japanese scrap exporters are exploring new markets including Turkey, market sources told Platts. “I believe it’s a current reality,” one US exporter said. “South Korea is no longer the strongest buyer in that market. Chinese surplus steel has decimated the Asian markets. If I were selling scrap in Japan, I’d also be looking for alternatives. For others, Turkey has been that alternative.”
