US shredded scrap prices peaked at $230/lt delivered mill in the Southeast market as mills searched far and wide for material in a tight scrap environment further compounded by river-related logistical problems. On a shipping point basis, scrap prices moved an average of $20/lt higher from December to January but delivered mill prices varied widely due to mills seeking remote scrap. Southeastern mills paid as much as $55-$65/lt in freight costs to springboard material from northern US areas into their regions.
