Tinkler builds coal empire as Whitehaven mulls bid

Nathan Tinkler, the youngest of Australia's mining magnates, could preside over a coal enterprise producing more than 30 million mt/year if his bid to acquire Whitehaven Coal succeeds. Whitehaven said late Friday that it is mulling a 5 billion Australia dollars (5.1 billion US dollars) takeover offer from a consortium led by Tinkler Group, which appears to have the support of key Whitehaven shareholders.
