Indian IO scandal: Investigators deem Bellary mines illegal

Investigations into iron ore mining operations in the Bellary district of southern India’s Karnataka state have so far revealed that holders of 69 of a total of 101 mining leases in the region had been involved in illegal mining activities. According to a report submitted by the Supreme Court’s Central Empowered Committee (CEC) last week, no illegality was determined by the team of investigators in the operations of 32 mines. Of these, 14 mines were operational and the remaining 18 were abandoned or non-functional prior to the mining ban imposed in Bellary in late-July.
