High domestic steel prices are a significant hurdle to launching feasible wind energy projects in Brazil, with firms turning to concrete instead of steel as a result, Steel Business Briefing learns. "Usiminas enjoys a near monopoly on domestic steel plate supply and the government allows it to set different prices for domestic sales and exports," says an analyst, adding that Brazilian steel prices are around 50-70% higher than in other countries.
