IRobot leads, but Foster-Miller spars for more U.S. robotic business. Until the war in Afghanistan, U.S. commanders saw ground robots as a technology in search of a military mission. That began to change July 31, 2002, when members of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division steered a 42-pound robot called Hermes into a cave near Qiqay, Afghanistan, near the Pakistan border, to look for Taliban or al-Qaida fighters.
