US zinc market awash in supply, imports dog galvanizers

Sources in the steelgalvanizing industry — which accounts for roughly 55% of all zinc demand — said this week a continuing onslaught of steel imports is impacting the domestic industry, so they have not needed to buy extra zinc used to coat steel, at least in the first half of this year. However, zinc producers are still churning out their product, including special high-grade material, at a healthy clip, so there is plenty of excess metal in the market, sources said.
