January global pig iron output down 3.4%

Global pig iron output in January fell 3.4% year on year to 97.8 million mt, with China leading the drop, according to World Steel Association data released Friday. China’s pig iron output in January fell 5.43% on year to 58 million mt, Worldsteel data showed. However, compared with December, output of the blast furnace iron rebounded in China — the world’s biggest steel producer — from 56.9 million mt. Global daily production rates for pig iron were 1.64% higher last month than in December, based on Platts calculations using Worldsteel data.
