Hurricane Sandy has taken a toll on some metallurgical coal production and exports from mines in West Virginia, Virginia and Maryland, companies and sources said Monday. At least one Appalachian coal mine has been temporarily idled because of the weather. “Our Vindex complex has announced plans to idle this afternoon and remain closed on Tuesday,” Arch Coal spokeswoman Kim Link said in an email.
