摘要

Recent research has highlighted the important role that alcohol seems to have played in the fluctuating mortality levels that have been observed in Russia since the mid-1980s [1-3]. In particular, the episodic heavy (or binge) drinking pattern of alcohol consumption that is common in the country;, in conjunction with other factors (such as beverage type);, has been linked to increased mortality , As yet, however, little research has been undertaken on which social and/or economic factors underpin this style of alcohol consumption. Even where such research has been done, the results have been sometimes contradictory. This can be seen with the earlier research that examined the association between heavy or binge drinking and economic hardship, as a (short-term) association , non-association and a different association for men and women have been previously noted.
