Railways announces sops for coal

Ahead of the railway budget, Indian railways has rewarded its largest customer-the coal industry by reducing punitive charges for overloading by almost half. The move is being seen as a precursor to other sops that Railways many announce in the forthcoming budget. Coal accounts for around 46 percent of total freight earnings of the railways. The railway ministry issued a notification recently, wherein the punitive charges for overloading coal have been reduced to two times of the normal freight rate for the commodity exceeding the permissible carrying capacity of the wagon. This was earlier at six times of the normal freight rate.
