Interactive services are likely to play a leading role in the connected TV future. Vendors and operators are working out the best ways to combine the web with TV. The increasing penetration of connected set-top boxes and TVs is likely to change people's expectations of their TV experience - possibly to match that of the web and mobile devices, according to Mark Groves, product marketing manager, interactive solutions, NDS (Stand 1.A71). Powerful set-tops and advanced middleware has enabled the multitasking of applications and the EPG, he says: "Using the always-on connectivity of cable and hybrid set-tops, a wide range of services can be made available to end users to leverage information available on the web and present it in a manner best suited to the TV, and to extend the viewing experience in a socially-connected and, most importantly, a contextual manner."
