One factor affecting both the cost of reception equipment: and the cost of transmitting in HD is the compression scheme chosen, European broadcasters are planning to take advantage of advanced compression technologies (MPEG-4 AVC) and, in the case of satellite, the bandwidth-expanding capabilities of the new satellite broadcasting standard DVB-S2, Headend vendors such as Harmonic, Tandberg Television, Scopus Video Technologies, Modulus, Thomson, Scientific-Atlanta and Skystream are gearing up (or have already geared up) to provide the equipment that will enable European broadcasters to leapfrog legacy technologies in the HD domain.
