Growth and yield of tomato as affected by different doses of nitrogen and phosphorus in light textured soil of Juglote, Northern Areas of Pakistan.

A field experiment was carried out during summer 2004, at KARINA Farm Juglote, Northern Areas of Pakistan, to study the impact of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) application in light textured soil on growth and yield of tomatoes and to develop more sustainable fertilization strategies. Different combinations of N and P (Control, 27.5:25, 55:50, 82.5:75, 110:100, 137.5:125, 165:150, and 192.5:175 kg ha-1) along with constant dose of potassium (K) were applied to plots laid out according to Randomized Complete Block Design, replicated three times. Analysis of the data reveals that various combinations of N and P application have significant effect on growth and yield of tomato as compared to control treatments. Maximum plant height (18.58 inches), number of branches plant-1 (17.77), number of leaves plant-1 (129.0), number of fruits plant-1 (21.79), fruit weight (67.22 g), yield plant-1 (1465 g) and yield hectare-1 (43.95 tons) were recorded in treatments receiving N and P @ 110 and 100 kg ha-1. Whereas, minimum plant height (11.31 inches), number of branches plant-1 (7.06), number of leaves plant-1 (61.41), number of fruits plant-1 (15.44), fruit weight (35.57 g), yield plant-1 (549.4 g) and yield hectare-1 (16.48 tons) were recorded in control treatments. In the light of above mentioned findings, N and P @ 110:100 kg ha-1 is the optimum dose for tomato cultivation at Juglote, Northern Areas of Pakistan..
