PERFORMANCE OF CULTIVATED AND WILD OLIVE CUTTINGS AS AFFECTED BY DIFFERENT LENGTH AND DIAMETER

摘要

An experiment was conducted to study the performance of cultivated and wild olive cuttings as effected by different length and diameter at Agricultural Research Institute, Tarnab, Peshawar during 2002. The selected varieties were Olea europaea (cultivated olive) and Olea cuspidata (wild olive). Cuttings of different lengths i.e. 15 cm, 20 cm, 25 cm and of different diameter 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm were taken. The results indicated that Olea europaea (cultivated olive) significantly effected all the parameters i.e.. early sprouting (26.95), maximum number of shoots per plant (8.30), shoot length (25.97 cm), number of root per plant (9.48), root length (9.54 cm) and plant survival percentage (38.64). While, minimum values were recorded for the above-mentioned parameters in Olea cuspidata Diameter of 1 cm cuttings showed maximum number of roots per plant (8.44), plant survival percentage (37.22) and early sprouting (29.31). Maximum number of shoots (7.38), shoots length (23.73 cm) and root length (8.38 cm) were recorded in 2 cm diameter cuttings. While minimum were noted all the above parameters in 3 cm diameter cuttings. Maximum root length (7.01 cm) and plant survival percentage (36.29) were recorded in 15 cm long cuttings. In Olea cuspidata (wild olive)1 cm diameter cutting showed best results for all parameters. While minimum were noted in 3 cm diameter cuttings. The interaction between variety and length and the interaction between variety and diameter and length had non-significant effect on all parameters except shoot length and number of root per plant respectively. While, the interaction between diameter and length had non-significant effect on all the parameters.
