Genetic variability among maize hybrids for yield and yield components.

A hybrid selection for a specific location, suitable for the condition climatic is one of the essential principles for improving production. Therefore, an experiment to study the variability among maize hybrids for yield and yield components was conducted at Agricultural Research Farm, NWFP Agricultural University, Peshawar, Pakistan during 2002. Twenty-one maize hybrids were studied in RCB Design using two replications. Data were recorded on days to 50% tasseling, pollen shedding, silking, plant height, ear height and grain yield (kg ha-1). The various maize hybrids showed significant differences for all the parameters studied. Enhanced 50% tasseling (49.5 days) was observed for NCML 87. Maximum number of days to 50% pollen shedding (67 days) was recorded for 3025 W while minimum (55.5 days) was found for R-2303, NCML 87 and NC2005. Similarly enhanced silking (71 days) was observed for NCML 993. Long stature plants (125.8 cm) were observed in hybrid DKL6525. Maximum ear height was noted for R-2207 (58.3 cm). Improved grain yield (4356 kg ha-1) was found for hybrid FHY396. The significant differences among the various hybrids for the various parameters may be due to differences in the genetic background of the hybrids..
