Evaluation of outcrossed maize progeny for grain yield traits.

Nine maize progenies (hybrid Babar, hybrid PSEV-3-4, hybrid SW9815, Genokrome Hybrid-1, Genokrome Hybrid-2, open-pollinated cultivars Sarhad White, Azam, Pahari and Jalal) were developed by manual pollinations during summer 2004 and were evaluated along with two controls (Jalal and Azam) in 2005 in Peshawar, Pakistan. Data were recorded on number of ears per plot, grains per ear, grains per row and grain yield ha-1. Significant amount of variability was observed among the progenies for all the traits. Outcross progeny of Genokrome Hybrid 2 produced the highest grain yield (6302.6 kg ha-1), followed by Genokrome Hybrid 1 (5811.6 kg ha-1). Genokrome Hybrid 1 produced the highest number of grains per row. Outcross progeny of hybrid Babar produced the highest number of ears per plot. Overall results showed that the outcross progenies of the different hybrids showed better performance than the open-pollinated controls. This suggests that outcrossing helps avoid inbreeding depression as may be expected for open pollination under natural conditions, where at least some of the progeny could result from self pollination due to synchrony of pollen shedding and silking.
