Effects of olanzapine on the PR and QT intervals in patients with schizophrenia

Prolongation of the PR interval is associated with increased risks of atrial fibrillation, pacemaker implantation, and all-cause mortality (Cheng et al., 2009). To date, we have reported that olanzapine (OLZ) has a greater QT prolongation effect compared to aripiprazole (Suzuki et al., 2011a), and that a female is a risk factor for the QT prolongation caused by OLZ (Suzuki et al., 2011b). Meanwhile, although there are several reports on first-degree heart block being attributed to OLZ (Kosky, 2002; Rajput et al., 2006), it is unknown precisely what effect OLZ treatment has on the electrocardiogram PR interval.
