IEC issues new rules for safety of electrical equipment on off-shore installations

In March, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) issued two new parts of its IEC 61892 series of standards which apply to the safety of electrical equipment used on off-shore petrochemical installations.~1 These standards cover appliances and systems used in the generation, distribution and storage of electrical energy for all purposes on off-shore facilities including pipeline, pumping (pigging) and compressor stations and single mooring buoys. This encompasses installations used for drilling, pumping and storage, though it specifically excludes equipment on oil tankers or electrical equipment designed for use in medical applications.
