Experts at the Russian Federal Space Agency are blaming interference from heavily charged particles emitted by the sun for the failure of a mission on the first step of its voyage to Mars’ moon Phobos. The Phobos-Grunt vehicle was launched by rocket on 9 November 2011 but did not fully escape terrestrial orbit after its main computer failed. The $165 million, spacecraft burnt up on re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere on 15 January making a conclusive examination of what went wrong impossible.~1
