Like many organizations, Norwalk, CT-based Arch Chemicals used to set safety goals of no more than "X" injuries. But then customers began to question that goal, essentially asking: "Why are you willing to tolerate hurting your employees?" said Dan Bennewitz, Arch Chemicals' corporate director of environmental, health and safety. "Because if you have a target other than zero, then you are willing to accept some level and say that was satisfactory."
