The UK Pesticide Guide 2015 - an essential source of information on pesticides

The 28th edition of this guide is even more important for all those using pesticides in the UK in view of the regulatory changes within the EU. Previous editions had already reflected the reduction in the pesticides that may be used, but there are now hundreds of new Extensions of Authorisation for Minor use (EAMUs) as these are vital for production of many important crops considered to be of less concern during the development of new pesticides. In 2015, there are only 13 new active ingredient profiles, only one of which is a new insecticide -etofenprox - recommended for pollen beetle control in oilseed rape, while 18 are lost. The book follows the same basic layout as in previous years, starting with the crop/pest guide (Section 1) indicating which pesticides are approved for particular pests. The main section (2) has the profile of 433 pesticides, including biopesticides, arranged alphabetically, in which the individual commercial products are listed with their uses and EAMUs, together with efficacy guidance, restrictions, crop specific information, environmental and safety aspects, plus the hazard classification and safety precautions, the latter are coded with a key to them in Appendix 4. With integrated pest management (IPM) a policy within the EU, biopesticide use is expected to increase. Section 3 lists products not available in distributor stores, either because they are no longer sold by the company concerned or because they are new approvals and have not yet been marketed. Their use is permitted up to the expiry date of the approval where supplies are available. Section 4 provides a list of adjuvants, while Section 5 -Useful Information gives an outline of current legislation, certificates of competence - the roles of BASIS and NPTC, maximum residue level and many other aspects of applying pesticides. There are 7 appendices and an index.
