Genomic DNA Mycobacterium avium extraction stool kits were compared with phenol-chloroform-isoamyl alcohol-proteinase K (PCIA) and a new PCIA detergent method. DNA was extracted from intestinal tissue of a goat suspected of John's disease and test results were evaluated spectrophotometrically for concentration of DNA extracted and quality (260/280nm ratio). Kits yielded higher and PCIA's least DNA quantity, whereas PCIA's yielded maximum DNA purity, and kits, least purity.
