Effects of topical 1% tropicamide on intraocular pressure in clinically normal guinea pigs.

Eight guinea pigs were given 1 drop 1% tropicamide ophthalmic solution (MydraxReg., Pharma Sina Darou) in one eye chosen randomly. The opposite eye served as untreated control. Controls consisted of 8 guinea pigs given 1 drop artificial tear solution in a randomly chosen eye and no treatment for the contralateral eye. Intraocular pressure readings were obtained immediately before and at 30, 60, 90 and 120 min after drug administration in both treatment and control groups. Mean IOP was not significantly altered in any eye at any time point during the study period compared with baseline in both groups. In Conclusion, topical application of 1% tropicamide had no statistically significant effect on intraocular pressure in guinea pigs.
