BIRD AND MAMMAL RISK ASSESSMENT FOR PESTICIDES IN EUROPE: A REVIEW OF CURRENT GUIDANCE

The change from SANCO to EFSA Bird and Mammal Risk Assessment Guidance has had the effect of significantly reducing long-term risk assessment failure rate for birds through adoption of more realistic Tier 1 scenarios, but has caused an increased long-term failure rate, to about 70%, for mammals. The increased failure rate for mammals is mainly due to the inclusion of the "small herbivorous mammal" (vole) generic focal species in a much wider range of crops under EFSA guidance, which has the effect of increasing the long-term exposure estimate more than 6-fold for a number of crops.
