摘要

The main objective of the present study is to establish the phenomena occurring during compression and to determine the major factors affecting the compressive strength of paper. First, some general aspects on paper compressive strength have been described, based on the analysis of the progressive deformation of the corrugated profile under compressive load. Then, useful mathematical expressions predicting the CMT values, versus true compression and buckling, have been established on the basis of experimental data concerning more than 250 paper grades. Thus, the CMT was expressed, with accuracy, as a function of both bending stiffness and internal bond strength. Such results appear as useful, practical tools, allowing the evaluation of the end-use properties of a corrugating medium. They introduce parameters enabling the optimisation of production, for instance the choice of raw materials, chemical aids and papermaking processes.
