Semiquantitative assessment of synovitis in osteoarthritis on non contrast-enhanced MRI.

We would like to comment on semiquantitative assessment of synovitis in osteoarthritis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A recently published article introduces a novel semiquantitative scoring system to assess the degree of synovitis on non-enhanced MRI. We fully agree with the authors that there is need for a reliable method of assessing the severity of synovitis on non-enhanced imaging as there are no published studies available. The authors reference two publications, but one of these only assessed signal changes within Hoffa's fat pad as a surrogate for synovitis and the other used contrast-enhanced MRI to determine sy-novial thickness.
